He is lighting a pipe.The man seated at the table, left of center, is John Henry Twachtman. His proper right arm is resting on the back of his chair, while he holds a cup in his proper left hand. The man seated right of center background is Theodore Robinson. In the right foreground is Robert Louis Stevenson, shown in profile, reading a newspaper which he holds in his proper left hand. His proper right arm rests on the table with his hand raised to his head. Stevenson is shown with a mustache, while the other three figures wear both mustaches and goatees.
