Censored!

SORRY, THIS PHOTO HAS BEEN CENSORED BY THE NATIONAL LIBRARY OF AUSTRALIA!

Under Australian copyright law, any photo, published or unpublished, anonymous or attributed, if taken before 1 January 1955, is out of copyright protection and in the public domain. The Australian Copyright Council is quite specific and unambiguous in regard to copyright law on photographs taken prior to 1 January 1955:

All photographs taken before 1955, whether published or not [are] in the public domain (copyright has expired).

Unfortunately, certain uninformed individuals employed by the Australian public at the National Library of Australia have, on the basis of a lack of understanding of Australian law, taken to intimidation and harassment of the owners, operators, and Internet providers of this website, at the expense of the Australian taxpayer, in violation of the rights of the general public to use public-domain imagery.

As a result, those pre-1955 photos derived from the NLA's collection must now be censored from our website. We apologize for this inconvenience, and suggest that you complain to the National Library of Australia.
